Witch of En Dor

” Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.” ” 1 Samuel 28:7 (NKJV)

King Saul had previously followed God’s command to get rid of all the mediums and spiritists (also known as witches) in Israel. But since Samuel died, Saul had not had answers to his prayers from the Lord. He was afraid and while he wasn’t ready to humble himself and return to God, he longed to have peace in knowing what he was to do about the Philistines. He now told his servants to find him a woman who claimed she could contact dead people. King Saul wanted to talk with Samuel once more.

So when his servants told him where the woman could be found, he disguised himself and went to her at night. He asked her to have a seance and bring up Samuel. At first she accused him of trying to set a trap for her so that she would be killed. However, he promised that nothing bad would happen to her.

The woman saw a projection of what seemed to be Samuel and at once she realized that the man before her was King Saul. She called him on his deception. King Saul asked her what she had seen (evidently he couldn’t see the projection at this time).

King Saul and the projection had a conversation in which the projection asked why Saul had disturbed him since God had left him and become his enemy. Satan and his angels know what is going on in the real world although they have limitations There are things they cannot know. Here one of the angels was impersonating Samuel and proceeded to tell Saul what the outcome of the battle would be and that Saul and his sons would die at the hands of the Philistines in tomorrow’s battle.

The woman was very concerned because King Saul looked like he would faint away. She quickly made a meal for him to revive him and to send him on his way.

God sometimes allows Satan and his angels to get involved in human’s lives like this time. It was in fact a direct warning to King Saul that if he chose to continue his plans for the next days’ battle, it would cost not only his life, but the lives of his sons.

Only when we get to heaven will we know the stories behind some of our most confusing events here on earth. But God has promised that there will be a time when we will have all of our questions answered.
