“And he said to his father, “My head, my head!” So he said to a servant, “Carry him to his mother”.” 2 Kings 4:19 (NKJV)
The child born to the Shunammite woman and her husband grew up. One day he was working with his father in the field and cried out that his head hurt. The father told a servant to carry the boy to his mother. The mother held him until noon when he died.
The mother took the dead child and carried him to Elisha’s room and laid him on the bed. Then she went to find her husband. She asked for one of the servants and a donkey so that she could go quickly to find Elisha, the man of God. Her husband was confused about why she wanted to see Elisha quickly. It wasn’t the Sabbath or any other special day. The mother told her husband that “It is well.” (2 Kings 4:23)
The mother told the servant to go as quickly as possible and not to wait up for her unless she told him to. She headed toward Mt. Carmel where she expected to find Elisha. Elisha saw her afar off and sent Gehazi to meet her.
When Gehazi caught up with the mother he asked if all was well. She replied that it is well. However, when the mother reached Elisha she grabbed him by the feet. Gehazi tried to pull her off from Elisha, but Elisha told him to leave her alone. He recognized that something was very wrong, but God hadn’t revealed it to him at that time.
The mother said to Elisha “Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me’?” (2 Kings 4:28, NKJV) Elisha grabbed his staff and told Gehazi to take the staff and lay the staff on the face of the child, but not to stop for anything or anyone on his way to the child.
The mother of the child refused to go with Gehazi, so Elisha went with her back to her home where the child lay in Elisha’s upper room. When they arrived, Gehazi told Elisha he had done as he had been told, but nothing had happened. The boy was still dead.
Elisha went up to the room alone and closed the door so it was just the boy and himself there with God. Elisha laid down on the boy and the boy’s body began to warm, but no other sign of life. Elisha walked in the room thinking and praying. Then he laid down on the boy again – his face to the boy’s face, his hands to the boy’s hands. This time the boy woke up and sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
Elisha called the mother to come into the room and to take up her son. The boy was well again.
Just because God gives us a special blessing does not mean that the enemy cannot attempt to take away that blessing. The Shunammite woman’s faith in God seemed to never waiver. She answered her husband and Gehazi with the words “it is well” even though all of the outward signs said her son had died. God rewarded her faith and trust that once a gift is given, God will not take away that gift.
