“The Shulamite
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
For your love is better than wine.” Song of Solomon1:2 (NKJV)
Song of Solomon is a beautiful love story with vivid imagery. The first woman is called the Shulamite. The translation of the name means a woman of Jerusalem. Some think that this woman may actually have been Solomon’s first wife – an Egyptian. She is extoling her feelings about Solomon’s kisses. She is also referred to as a young country maiden.
She mentions the fragrance of the ointments used to make her more enticing to her lover. Then she asks to have her lover draw her away to spend time intimately with him.
Knowing that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines and that he is the author of Song of Solomon, it is reasonable to interpret the book as a love story concerning one of the many women in his life. However, there is a more beautiful love story that can be drawn from this book.
If we consider the story as an allegory about Christ and His followers or believers. There are many references throughout scripture of the relationship between Christ and His bride. This is a reference to those who have chosen to accept Christ as their personal Saviour.
Kisses from Christ can be viewed as Christ’s assurances of pardoning us for our sins. When we realize that we have been forgiven, we experience joy, peace, and eternal hope. That experience for us is better than any artificial highs we might experience through the world.
