Standing on the Promises

“So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?” 1 Kings 1:11 (NKJV)

David was now aged and his health was failing him. Absalom’s brother, Adonijah, decided he was going to be the next king of Israel. However, that was not what God had said would happen. The prophet, Nathan, came to Bathsheba to alert her to the fact that Adonijah was setting himself up as king in David’s place.

Bathsheba went to David’s room and reminded him that he had sworn that Soloman was to succeed him as king (vs. 17) and then proceeded to update David on Adonijah’s activities in proclaiming himself as king. Nathan came in and confirmed what Bathsheba was telling David. Bathsheba had lived through a lot with David – both good and bad – yet she still had faith that David was a man of his word. God led the prophet Nathan to be at the right place at the right time to back up Bathsheba’s story. The end of the story is that Soloman was the next king of Israel just as God had told David would happen.

What can I learn from this part of Bathsheba’s story? Sometimes God asks us to stand up for what he has confirmed to us previously. Bathsheba remembered that David had told her that Soloman would be the next king. If she had doubted or decided that she had just heard wrong, all of history would have been changed. However, Bathsheba played her role perfectly and God’s will was obtained.

In my life there may be times when I have to remember how God has led in the past, what his specific promises to me were, and that God is always faithful to fulfill his promises in His time. I need to be bold enough to act upon those promises
