“For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David.” 1 Kings 11:4 (NKJV)
And so Solomon’s downfall was the foreign women that he loved – lusted for. He had started off so pure in heart, longing to have God be the one to give him wisdom in leading the nation. How far he had fallen! Yet, God has patience and love toward us even when we willfully turn away from him. He is wooing us back to Him because He is perfect love.
There was a price to be paid for being disloyal to God. The kingdom would be divided and torn from the royal family. God allowed his descendants to keep one tribe – to fulfill God’s ultimate plan of bringing Christ into the world to save us. Oh what a great price to pay for disobedience to God. Because of God’s relationship with David, he allowed all this to happen after Solomon died. However, he knew it would happen because God told him it would.
It matters who we allow to get close to our hearts. Today I want God first in my life and then for all of those close to me to have already chosen to love the God of heaven and earth more than anything on this earth.
