Ruth Noticed by Boss

“So Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field, and glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” ” Ruth 2:2 (NKJV)

Verse 1 told us the name of the “him” in verse 2 – Boaz, a close relative of Naomi. Ruth asked permission from Naomi to work and bring in food for the two of them. Naomi gave her permission. Ruth was willing to work and work hard to support herself and Naomi, her mother-in-law.

Oh that today’s generation had such work ethics! There are exceptions, but in general it seems that there is a great difference in life expectations from those who are 50+ and those who are younger.

When Boaz came to the field he greeted the workers like he evidently did whenever he came out to the field because the workers greeted him back. Boaz noticed Ruth among the workers. One has to wonder what it was that caught his eye. Was it her hard work? Was it that she looked differently from the other workers? Was she beautiful? The Bible doesn’t tell us the details.
Boaz asked the servant who was in charge of the reapers what he knew about this young lady. After he found out that she had come with Naomi, he told Ruth to stay with Boaz’ young women in his fields and not to go anywhere else. He also told the men to leave her alone. She was to get water from the vessels to drink whenever she was thirsty. Boaz was already taking special interest and care concerning Ruth.

Listen to Timothy Tye’s song “God’s Beloved Daughter.” You too are beloved of God!
