Rescued by Royalty

“Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” ” Exodus 2:5-6 (NKJV)

Pharaoh’s daughter had compassion upon the infant in the make-shift boat. Jochebed had obeyed to the letter but not the spirit of Pharaoh’s order – to put all the newborn males into the Nile River. The baby was in the river! Pharaoh’s daughter recognized that the baby was one of the Hebrews’ children. In choosing to keep and adopt the child she was directly going against her father’s orders. Wonder if she had reason to want to be somewhat rebellious against her father’s decisions?

However well intentioned, Pharaoh’s daughter did not have the ability to take care of and feed a three-month old infant. Miriam steps out from her hiding place along the riverbank and asks the princess if she would like her to find a nursing mother from the Hebrews to feed and take care of the baby for her. (Exodus 2:7)

Pharaoh’s daughter could have decided to find an Egyptian nursemaid for the infant, but she didn’t! She told Miriam to go and fetch a nursemaid from the Hebrews. Of course, Miriam went and got her mother – the baby’s mother. The princess told Jochebed that she would pay her wages to take care of the infant. The Bible does not spell out how long Jochebed took care of Moses before taking him to the palace. However, it had to be long enough that he had learned stories of God and of Hebrew history so that when he went to the palace God’s truth was already a seed planted in his heart.

We have been rescued by royalty too. Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings of the entire universe. He came and rescued us from our sins and bring us as adopted sons and daughters of the Most High God.
