Outrageous Love

Abraham and Sarah had a son, Isaac. There are several really neat stories that happened while he was growing up, but we’ll save those stories for another year. This year I’m focusing on the women of the Bible.

Isaac was approaching manhood and a time to look for a wife. Abraham was getting on in age (after all he was about 100 when Isaac was born! He didn’t want Isaac to get distracted by the women in the land of Canaan because they did not worship the living God. Abraham didn’t want Isaac to go back to the country where he had been called out of by God, but he sent his most trusted servant to go see if he could find a woman that God could bless for Isaac.

The servant made the trip with camels and gifts for the family if he found a suitable woman for Isaac. He asked God for guidance. “Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.” (Genesis 24:14 NKJV)

Lo and behold, Rebekah who was of Abraham’s brother’s family, came and did exactly as the servant had prayed. What can I learn from this snapshot of Rebekah’s life? Well, Rebekah was kind to strangers. She saw a need and it was within her power to fill that need. This was an example of love in action – God’s love for others, not expecting anything in return.

I want that kind of love to share with others. Listen to the Gaither family singing “Loving God, Loving Each Other.”
