“Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the LORD our God,
Until He has mercy on us.” Psalm 123:2 (NKJV)
God equates his mercy toward us to how a maid is taken care of by good mistresses. In Bible times (and many times even since) maids were actually young females who had been captured during a war and were then trained to help the lady of the household. The young slave-maid had no expectation of anything good coming from any other source than the woman she served.
The Psalmist says that’s the same way we need to look to the Lord, our God. He provides everything good to us individually as well as collectively. We have no expectation of having anything good happen to us or for us except that it comes from the hand of our Creator God.
However, that is where the similarity ends. The slave-maid cannot choose her mistress. She may be given to a good mistress or a bad mistress. We however, have a good, good God. All the gifts we receive from Him are for our good. He loved us before we even knew we needed Him.
