Obey to the End

“Now the rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge and understanding— These joined with their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s Law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and His ordinances and His statutes: Nehemiah 10:28-29 (NKJV)

Nehemiah went over the law of Moses with the Israelites after the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt. Then the leaders signed a covenant promising to live by the law of God as written down by Moses. Then the rest of the people entered into the same agreement – including the wives and daughters. This was important because in Hebrew culture almost everything was just done by the men and the women were expected to obey their husbands and fathers. No one was left out of the covenant agreement.

While it is true that God’s plan A was that the husband/father would be the head of the household, not only in material matters, but especially in spiritual matters. What this covenant agreement demonstrates is that every person, women included, is responsible to God for their personal actions in following God’s law.

When God shows any person (male or female) more information about following His law, they are then responsible for obeying God above obeying any person. That is a challenge for each of us because we love our spouses, but we must love God more.
