“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.'” 1 Peter 1:13-16 (NKJV)
When I think of “sober” today, I’m thinking of someone who isn’t influenced by alcohol or other mind altering substance. However, when I look up the Greek word used here, it refers to being calm and collected in spirit, to be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect. https://www.blueletterbible.org/lexicon/g3525/nkjv/tr/0-1/ That requires mental processing throughout my day’s activities. It’s not easy to be calm when everything around me is chaos!
The more I learn about God as revealed through Jesus Christ it changes my conduct, my actions and thoughts. Because of everything Christ has done for me, His love for me even when I didn’t acknowledge Him as Lord of my life, makes me want to be an obedient child of God. I don’t want to do anything to cause God to be ashamed of me. I don’t want to do anything to cause others to see an inaccurate picture of God through my actions or words. I want others to see Christ living through me.
