My Plan Better than God’s?

“So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.” Genesis 16:2 (NKJV)

Sarai determines that God is the one who is preventing her from having children. She seemed to have forgotten that God is who said she and Abram would have a son to carry on the family name. If God was preventing her from having a child but still promising a son, then there had to be a bigger picture that she wasn’t able to see at that moment.

Her suggestion is really stupid just taking into account female psychology. Never, never put a man between two women! It will be a disaster for certain. This situation is a true example of disaster in the making. I wonder why Abram went along with Sarai’s suggestion? Could he have wondered if it were possible that he was the reason they hadn’t had any children? If he at least tried Sarai’s plan, he could determine if he was capable of siring a child. The Bible does not fill in the details as to why Abram went along with Sarai.

We are then given the name of Sarai’s maid. “Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.” Genesis 16:3 (NKJV)

Well, Abram’s ability to have children was no longer an issue. “Then Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The LORD judge between you and me.” Genesis 16:5 (NKJV).

What can I learn from this portion of Sarai’s story? My plans are never superior to God’s plans! No matter what my excuse, if God has made it plain about His plans, I need to submit to His plans rather than making my own detour.
