“Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.” ” Exodus 18:6 (NKJV)
Before Moses entered Egyptian territory he had sent Zipporah and his two sons back to Jethro in Midian for their own protection. Moses wasn’t sure of the future and didn’t want to jeopardize his family if things went sour. Now, Jethro brought Zipporah and the two boys to Moses.
What must it have been like for Zipporah and their two sons to have been sent away? Yes, for their own protection, but what about Moses’ protection? Oh, the waiting, wondering how Moses was doing. Wondering if something bad had happened to him or if God had been able to protect him. The long days and nights of just not knowing what was happening to Moses. This was long before the speed of the Internet where we know in seconds if something major happens, regardless of where we live here on earth. Love helps us to imagine the worse possible outcomes when distance keeps us from knowing what’s happening to our loved ones.
Jethro was a wise father-in-law and upon learning that Moses and the entire Israelite nation had left Egypt set out to have Moses reunited with his wife and sons. This was necessary for everyone in that family. Fathers are needed for their sons as much as mothers are needed too. God planned that husbands and wives were to be together, not separated by miles for lengthy periods of time. It was time – Moses’ family was reunited.
Listen now to Hope Channel, South Philippians Studio’s musical group singing “The Family of God.” It won’t be long now and it will be time for the Family of God to be reunited for eternity.
