Maintain Discretion and Preserve Knowledge

“My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
Lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge. Proverbs 5:1-2 (NKJV)

This verse says that to preserve discretion and keep knowledge, I need to pay attention to God’s wisdom and to listen to God’s understanding. Although it could also be interpreted that Solomon was talking to his son and saying to pay attention to Solomon’s wisdom. Even taking that interpretation, from what we have already studied about where Solomon got his wisdom from, it goes back to God! All wisdom originates with the Creator God.

Ok, so the task before me today is to pay attention to God’s wisdom. How do I accomplish that? Well, if I start with actively listening while I’m reading God’s Word, praying before I open God’s Word, asking for the Holy Spirit to guide my reading and understanding of what I’m reading, I have a good start on paying attention to God’s wisdom. I can reflect on what I’ve experienced … both good and bad … to see God’s hand and potentially, why I went off track and how to get back on-track!

I need to align my actions and thoughts with God’s written instructions for His children. When I’m faced with a decision, I need to consider my options. Which option lines up with God’s Word? Maybe all of the “options” that I can see don’t line up … well, God has a choice that I may not have considered. I just have to ask the Holy Spirit to show me which path to take and then take time to listen for the Holy Spirit’s prompting.
