“Then Saul said, “Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’ ” But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.” 1 Samuel 18:25 (NKJV)
Now Saul’s plot takes a nasty turn. Yes, the Philistines were enemies of Israel, but how would you feel if you knew that to marry the man you loved 100 men had to die? Not only die, but had to be killed by the man you loved and then their bodies mutilated! I don’t know about how Mikal felt, but I definitely wouldn’t have liked to be part of that plot.
By this time it became evident that David did care deeply for Mikal because not only did he fulfill King Saul’s requirement but he doubled the number of Philistines to be killed and brought two hundred foreskins to Saul.
Now Mikal had at least an inkling that David might care for her. He showed how much he valued her by doubling the requirement of her father. We have an even greater proof of God’s love for us. He sent Jesus Christ to live and die for us while we were still sinners and rejecting His offer of love to us.
