“My beloved is mine, and I am his.
He feeds his flock among the lilies.” Song of Solomon 2:16 (NKJV)
The country maiden had assurance that the beloved was hers and that she was also his. She recognizes that his social status is higher than hers because she refers to the fact that he has ownership of a flock that he takes care of. Earlier she had said that she was basically a day laborer in a vineyard. There is a wide gulf in most societies between those two positions.
As Christians we need to throw away our preconceived notions about status values. No one is greater than anyone else in God’s kingdom (except God himself!). Yet, from the spiritual perspective, we can be assured that even though there is a wide gulf between how small we are in comparison to the vast universe, our Heavenly Father (and Christ and the Holy Spirit and the heavenly angels) loves each of us beyond human understanding.
