“Then the king said, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” And the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.” ” Esther 6:3 (NKJV)
Remember when Esther took the message from Mordecai to the king and saved his life? During the night after Esther’s first banquet with the king, he couldn’t sleep. So like many of us, he asked someone to get him a history book (of events of the kingdom) and read it to him. Might get him sleep eventually!
Well one of the events they read to him about that night was when Esther gave the message to him from Mordecai that saved the king’s life. He’d forgotten all about that in the urgency of the situation of taking care of the two ruffians.
The king heard someone in the outer court and asked that the person be brought in to him. Well, it was Haman … coming to convince the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows Haman had just finished building for his execution. But, this wasn’t going to be a good time to bring up that idea.
The king asked Haman what the king should do to honor someone who delighted the king. Well, Haman couldn’t think of anyone but himself worthy of being honored that way. He suggested that one of the king’s robes be put upon the man, let him ride a horse the king has previously ridden, and put the royal crest upon his head. Then have one of the king’s noble princes lead him through the city telling everyone that this is a man the king wishes to honor.
Oh, no!!! When Haman was told he was to lead Mordecai through the city and do just as he had outlined (when he thought it was going to be done to him) he was outraged. Could this day get any worse? He did have the second banquet with the king and queen to look forward to that day.
This was evidence again that Esther had been brought to the king’s palace for a purpose. Not only to save the king’s life, but now that story being re-told was going to play an important part in saving her life and the lives of her people.
