“‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her.’ ” And he opened the door and fled.” 2 Kings 9:10 (NKJV)
Remember Elisha’s prophecy that Jezebel would be killed and her body eaten by dogs? Ahab had been killed in battle but it seemed that the prophecy about Jezebel was forgotten. She still caused havoc without bounds. Yet this time a young man, a servant of Elisha, came to Ramoth Gilead at Elisha’s direction, and after he annointed Jehu to be the next king of Israel and repeated the prophecy about dogs eating Jezebel.
Jehu went almost immediately and killed Jehoram who the Bible also calls Joram, King of Israel by shooting him with an arrow between his arms and the arrow went through his heart (2 Kings 9:24). The warriors with Jehu also, at Jehu’s direction, shot Ahaziah, king of Judah and he also died.
When Jezebel heard that Jehu had come to Jezreel, she put on eye make-up and fixed her hair and stood at the window watching for Jehu. Jehu looked up at the window and asked those around who was on his side! And two or three of the eunuchs in the room with Jezebel threw her down from the window.
Jezebel’s body splattered blood on the wall and the horses. Jehu trampled her body with his horse. Then Jehu went to get a meal. As he was finishing eating and drinking, he remembered Jezebel’s body was outside and because she was a king’s daughter, sent men to get her body to bury it. But all the men found was her skull and the palms of her hands. Elisha’s prophecy had come true as dogs had eaten her body.
What lesson can I learn from Jezebel in this situation? God sometimes delays our punishment to allow us time to repent of our sins. However, if we do not repent, his judgment is sure. What am I doing or thinking today that God is not pleased with? If I don’t change my thoughts and actions, judgment will be sure to follow.
Lord, show me where I need to make changes in my life so that I may be acceptable in your sight. As I open the Word of God – the Bible – show me and soften my heart to accept your discipline today.
