“Now when the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his daughter, to go in to the king, she requested nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the custodian of the women, advised. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.” Esther 2:15 (NKJV)
All of the young women had been prepared for 12 months by the king’s eunuch. That’s a long time to receive queenly treatments! Esther could have asked for anything to take from where she had been staying for the past 12 months when she was told that it was her turn to go see the king. Instead, she relied upon what Hegai suggested that she take and asked for nothing else.
Maybe the time living with Mordecai after her parents died had caused her to not expect anything except what was offered, or maybe that was just her true personality. It really doesn’t matter about the why. What is important is that it was the right thing for her to do at this time. Her behavior during the previous 12 months caused Hegai to favor her above all of the other young women trying out for the position of queen. He provided to Esther special beauty treatments and moved her into the best housing for the young women desirous of becoming the new queen.
The time had come for the king to meet Esther. She had found favor with all who saw her, but would that also include the king? The king loved her more than all the other women and he stopped the search. He found his new queen and placed the queen’s crown upon her head.
Does my day-to-day choices matter? Can others see Jesus living in me? Make that your prayer today. Listen to an old favorite song, written by B.B. McKinney in 1924 – “Let Others See Jesus in You”.
