History Repeats

“The men of the place asked him about his wife, and he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “my wife”—thinking, “the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, since she is very beautiful.” ” Genesis 26:7 (NKJV)

Oh, come on now! Isaac, didn’t you learn anything from your father’s experience trying to pass Sarai off as his sister? The stories were around, why didn’t Rebekah pay attention to past history within the family? One thing seems consistent – both Abram and Isaac married beautiful women.
Of course, just like with Abram and Sarai, Isaac and Rebekah’s experience included God intervening. God caused Abimelech to look out a window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah before anyone had taken liberties with Rebekah. Of course, Abimelech sent Isaac and Rebekah on their way.

What lesson can I learn from this part of Rebekah’s story? Deceit doesn’t pay? History repeats itself? Sometimes it’s not wise to just go along with whatever your husband says? Definitely those three lessons can be applied to me today and probably more that I’ve not thought of.

When I go through experience after experience (especially when they look very similar) I need to examine the situation to find out if I’m doing something outside of God’s will. God will continue to bring me back to the same issue until I pass the test. I must admit that God’s brought me to the same test multiple times because I stubbornly did not learn the lesson the first time.

Lord, thank you for your patience with me, bringing me to test after test until I finally acknowledge what you’re trying to teach me about myself.
