God Will Take Care of You

“But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. Psalm 22:9-10 (NKJV)

In this Psalm, David makes reference to his mother. We hear a lot about his father, but the Bible does not tell us anything about his mother. The Talmud says that King David’s mother was Nitzevet bat Adael. She is thought to be a Canaanite slave woman who became pregnant with David after switching places with one of Jesse’s wives. According to tradition, while Jesse accepted that David was his son, he had him tending the sheep which was considered a task too low for his older brothers. Jesse had made a distinction between the sons of his wives and the son of the slave woman.

I hadn’t known anything about David’s mother, even though I’ve studied the Bible since I first learned to read at the age of 4. Preparing for these devotionals keeps teaching me something new every day about the nature of our God and His relationship with His people.

If God can use a slave woman to give birth to a man who is later described as a man after God’s own heart, then I can trust that he can take care of me and he can take care of you.

There’s a song I grew up listening to and later learned to play on the piano and sing that was written a very long time ago. In1904 the words were written by Civillia D. Martin and the following year the music was written by W. Stillman Martin. Listen now to Lisa and Neil Rondina as they sing “God Will Take Care of You.”
