“Then Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go, you and your household, and stay wherever you can; for the LORD has called for a famine, and furthermore, it will come upon the land for seven years.” ” 2 Kings 8:1
Remember the Shunammite woman and her husband who provided a room for Elisha? Remember that after she had a son, the son became ill and died, then Elisha raised the child from death? In this chapter Elisha tells that woman and her whole household to go to any place where there is food because there will be a famine for seven years. God did not forget the kindness shown by this family to the prophet Elisha.
Now the seven years of famine have come and gone. The lady and her household had gone to the land of the Philistines where food was plentiful. But now that the famine was over, she returned to the land of Israel and asked the king for her house and land. Because she came on her own, it is possible that her husband has passed away at some previous point in time.
The king talked with Gehazi about Elisha’s good works over the years and during the conversation realized that this woman was the one whose child had been raised from the dead by Elisha. The king confirmed the information with the woman. Then the king appointed an officer to restore all that had been hers when she left and to give her all the proceeds from the land from the time she left until she returned.
God doesn’t forget us ever. From the scriptures it appears that at this time she is a widow with no one to care for her, but God provided the resources to take care of her. God will take care of us too. It may not be as dramatically illustrated as in this case, but every day that we wake up God is taking care of us.
