“A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5 (NKJV)
God is the father, the protector, the provider of those without earthly fathers (and even poor examples of fathers). He is also the defender of widows.
In Bible times widows would be dependent upon any sons that might be old enough to help support the widow or the community. They did not have the opportunity to have a paying job most of the time. Often they might have been abused or neglected. They were legally subordinate to the males of her husband’s family.
How does this apply to us today? God is our defender. We may experience abuse or neglect in many ways here on this earth. We may not see justice happen to those who take advantage of us in our lifetime. However, we can claim this promise that the Lord, our God is our defender and protector for all of eternity.
There will be a judgment day for all to come before the Almighty and justice will be served. However, my heart is not asking for justice so much as asking for mercy. Because I have been shown mercy and God says that I need to show mercy to others in response to the mercy given me. Some will not accept that mercy and the responsibility will remain with them.
