“All the women who were gifted artisans spun yarn with their hands, and brought what they had spun, of blue, purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. And all the women whose hearts stirred with wisdom spun yarn of goats’ hair.” Exodus 35:25-26 (NKJV)
Reading on in Exodus 35 from this morning’s devotional, the writer (many believe it was Moses) emphasizes that the women were actively involved in the preparation of the tabernacle. They were gifted artisans – skilled workers taking raw materials and making them beautiful as well as useful.
Artisans were known for being disciplined in their craft. They were attentive to every small detail of their trade. They would identify problems and enjoyed finding beautiful, practical solutions. They enjoyed working at a steady pace rather than pushing for deadlines then crashing. They chose to use their skills for the better good of the entire community.
How can I nourish my soul with this knowledge? As a woman in today’s society my craft may not be working with the linen materials to create curtains and other items for the tabernacle of the Lord. However, I can choose to use the gifts God has given me carefully. I can pay attention to small details in whatever task God assigns to me. I can face each day with a spirit to identify situations which can be made better by a practical solution that either I have the gift to solve or I know someone else who is better qualified but I can encourage them to take action. I can address tasks in small, definable steps so that I continually am working toward making the situation better for the entire community rather than trying to rush toward a deadline and then drop out of active service for a lengthy period of time because I’m too worn out.
