Faithful God

“A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” ” 2 Kings 4:1 (NKJV)

Elijah had gone up into heaven and Elisha was the new prophet of the Lord. The story begins with a widow of one of the sons of the prophets asking Elisha for help because since her husband was dead she had no way to pay the creditor. She must have had faith that God could work whatever was needed to take care of her family.

Elisha asked her what she had. A simple request. All she had was a jar of oil. Elisha told her to go borrow vessels from all of her neighbors. She was not to gather just a few, but to get as many as she could.

Then Elisha told her to do something that seems strange to us. He told her to go inside their house with her two sons and close the door. Then she was to pour oil from the jar into each of the borrowed vessels until they were all full.

That takes faith – a huge amount of faith from my perspective. But she did what Elisha told her without doubting. God rewarded her faith and trust. The oil did not run out until all of the jars were full. Elisha told her to go sell the oil and use the money to pay the creditor and then to live off the rest.

God is faithful to take care of us when we fully trust that he will do as he has promised. Listen to I Am They as they sing “Faithful God.”
