Ezra – Helper

“And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ ” Genesis 2:18 (NKJV)

This is the first time in the Bible that something wasn’t good. Now, I really believe that the writer of Genesis was just speaking in human terminology. It didn’t come as any surprise to God.
From this verse though, if I’m looking for what can nourish my soul – I’m seeing two points. First the woman was to be a helper to Adam. If I apply this text to my life, how can I be a helper to those around me to fulfill God’s purpose for me? The Hebrew word “Ezar” means to help or to support. I need to become a Ezar for the Lord in every relationship in my life, not just my spouse.
The second point is that the helper is to be comparable to Adam. The Hebrew phrase used here can be interpreted in a couple of ways – in the presence of him; in front of oneself; in your view or purpose; or what is conspicuous – you can’t miss it! In this text it would appear that the point being made is that as a helper, she was to be right there, by his side. When applying this concept to my life, I’m not supposed to be helping off in an obscure corner, but alongside those I’m helping.

Heavenly Father, help me today to be the Ezar you created me to be. Let my words and actions reflect You so clearly that others do not see me, but only see you working through circumstances.
