Excellent Wife

“An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones. Proverbs 12:4 (NKJV)

Solomon is generally believed to be the author of most of the book of Proverbs. He had tangible evidence of what an excellent wife is as well as those who didn’t quite measure up. Some characteristics of an excellent wife might be: loyalty, being cheerful, having capabilities to keep the household needs met and thriving, and being strong – physically, spiritually and emotionally. His wife would be the best thing he has going for him.

I cannot imagine being married to a man who had 700 wives and 300 concubines! I guess I don’t like being another piece of property. Solomon also had evidence of women who caused shame among those 1,000 women! Some characteristics of the wife who causes shame could be: a busybody, a woman who runs all over town gossiping, a lazy woman, a woman who dishonors her husband by words or actions, etc.

Lessons to learn from this verse include making choices to support the man in my life; taking time to be cheerful rather than being someone who is constantly complaining or finding fault; brush up on household skills – maybe taking a cooking class, spending time making sure that the house and clothing are clean and ready for use; and having an active prayer life and Bible study to draw me closer to God and thereby be a better wife.
