“I am dark, but lovely,
O daughters of Jerusalem,
Like the tents of Kedar,
Like the curtains of Solomon.” Song of Solomon 1:5 (NKJV)
She goes on to explain that her skin has darkened because she was required by her angry brothers to work in the vineyards and so she wasn’t able to take care of herself in the pampered way women were expected to do at that time.
She finds fault with her personal appearance in one breath, but then adds that she is also lovely. She recognized her limitations but also her assets.
Do I as a Christian take time to assess my limitations and assets for the Kingdom of God? None of us are all bad or all good. It is important that we recognize our limitations, but not to the point where we are depressed and feel we are worthless. We also need to recognize the gifts God has bestowed upon us and use those gifts to benefit others and most of all to bring glory to our God.
Listen to Shawna Edwards as she sings “I Am a Witness.”
