“Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (NKJV)
This morning we looked at Psalm 24:4 which said that we needed clean hands and a pure heart. I can’t make my heart pure because my heart is deceitful and wicked. But … God can create in me a clean heart! I only need to yield to His Holy Spirit working in me and He does the heavy work.
One of the guiding statements in my life a friend of mine taught me years ago. “I can’t, God can, I decide to let Him.” It takes humbleness to acknowledge that I can’t do something (or anything). I have to submit to someone who can. A two-year old can’t reach the cupboards to set the table. They have to recognize that they can’t do it alone. However, mom, dad, sister, brother, uncle, aunt, grandma, or grandpa can come along and the 2-year old ask for help (which is then joyfully provided). That’s the God can!. But how many times have I (like some 2-year olds I have known) shouted back – I’ll do it! (even when I know I can’t)? I have to decide to let God do for me what I can’t do for myself.
As we say goodnight to this Christmas Day, listen to Shannon Wexelberg as she sings “Change Me“.
