“Now Esther spoke again to the king, fell down at his feet, and implored him with tears to counteract the evil of Haman the Agagite, and the scheme which he had devised against the Jews.” Esther 8:3 (NKJV)
Even after Haman had been hanged, the Jews were not yet safe. The previous decree couldn’t just be erased and declared void. Esther begged the king to do something, anything, to save her and her people. The king’s response was to have Esther write a new decree that all the Jews had the right to defend themselves and their property. Not only that but that they had the king’s permission to destroy and kill anyone who would try to attack them.
The king sent the new decree out to all the provinces of his kingdom and had it delivered by couriers on royal horses. And joy and gladness filled the hearts of the Jews all across the kingdom because their queen cared about them enough to do what she could to save them from Haman’s decree.
We have an enemy even more cunning than Haman. Our enemy wants for everyone to share his personal fate. You see, at the cross of Calvary, his fate was sealed for all time. He doesn’t want to be alone when the time for his judgment day is set. He will tell all types of lies to gain followers. But we have a choice. We can choose to follow Jesus and to share His good news of salvation with others. Our God loves us, his creation, so much that he sent Jesus to live and die for our sins so that when we accept his gift of grace we do not have to die the eternal death. Like the couriers we have the opportunity to tell others that the king of the universe has made a way for all who accept his offer to live with him for all eternity.
