Be Kind to Others

“The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.” 1 Samuel 25:3 (NKJV)

Abigail was married to a very harsh man who did not respect the Lord. Maybe you or someone you know has been or is in a similar situation. Take hope and courage. God took care of Abigail and He will take care of you too (even though we may not understand how it can happen).
David and his men were near where Nabal’s shepherds were sheering the sheep. David ten of his young men and reminded Nabal that David had protected his shepherds and the flock while they were in Carmel. He asked for some food for his men.

Nabal’s answer was basically, I don’t know you and no, I’m not giving you anything! When David’s men returned and told him what Nabal had said, David and his men put on their swords and started toward Nabal’s home. David was angry that his kindness had been returned with unkindness.

But one of Nabal’s shepherds sought out Abigail and told her all that had happened and that David had indeed taken care of them and the flock while they were in Carmel.

Abigail immediately gathered food fit for a king, loaded the food on donkeys and sent the servants before her to David and his men. She did not tell Nabal what she was doing.
When she reached David, she got off her donkey and fell at his feet. She proceeded to admit that her husband was a scoundrel and that she wished that she had seen the young men that David had sent because she would have given them the food she now brought.

Abigail did all that was humanly possible to right the wrong done by Nabal to David. Sometimes we have to step in and try to right wrongs that others have done, as much as it is within our power to do so. God will bless us when we treat others well.
