“When she looked, there was the king standing by a pillar according to custom; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. So Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, “Treason! Treason!” ” 2 Kings 11:14 (NKJV)
Remember Athaliah – the grandmother? She was not happy with the rejoicing and crowning Joash king of Judah. Jehoiada commanded the army officers to take Athaliah out of the house of the Lord and to slay anyone who tries to stop them.
The military who had been protecting King Joash took Athaliah out of the house of the Lord and killed her at the horses’ entrance to the king’s house. She had thought she was above any earthly or heavenly authority because she was the queen mother of the previous king.
What can I learn from this story? No matter who I think I am or how exalted I am in my own eyes, no one (including me) is above God and the sooner I acknowledge that the happier I will be.
