A Prudent Wife

“Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers,
But a prudent wife is from the LORD.” Proverbs 19:14 (NKJV)

Oh how I want to be a prudent wife – from the Lord. But what is a prudent wife? Let’s think about five general characteristics of a prudent wife.

The first is being considerate. She would think about what is right and how to act accordingly. She would be considerate of other’s feelings and preferences, especially her husband’s feelings and preferences.

The second is being supportive. She would be encouraging and supportive of her husband in all matters where it does not conflict with the Word of God – the Bible. Sometimes we tend to be quietly supportive – so quiet that no one hears us. That is not what is meant here.

The third is being responsible. This would include matters pertaining to finances as well as responsible actions on her part. Taking responsibility for what she does and does not do even when no one else might know. God knows.

The fourth is being self-controlled. She would exercise restraint. She would not act upon impulse as a general rule. There may be times when it is clear that the Holy Spirit prompts one to do something out of their normal character. This type of situation is a rare occurrence and not the general rule.

The fifth is keeping confidence. There are things that her husband may share with her that are not for everyone else to know about. It can also be that one of the children share something confidentially. She is a trustworthy keeper of private matters. This does not include keeping secrets that would hurt someone or might be considered abuse.

As women or men seeking to be all that God wants us to be, we long for God to breathe upon us to change us into His likeness. Listen to the Heritage Singers as they sing “Breathe on Me.”
