A Mother’s Love

“Now Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until the late rains poured on them from heaven. And she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night.” 2 Samuel 21:10 (NKJV)

There was a three year famine in Israel. King David asked the Lord what was the cause. The Lord reminded him that Saul had killed the Gibeonites without cause. Israel had sworn to protect the Gibeonites, but King Saul had violated that agreement.

King David called the Gibeonites together and asked what they would have him to do to make things right between them. They asked for seven of King Saul’s descendants to be delivered so they could hang them and David agreed.

David took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Rizpah and Saul and the five sons of Michal and Adriel and delivered them to the Gibeonites. They were all hanged at one time.

Rizpah the mother Armoni and Mephibosheth guarded the bodies of her sons against the birds and beasts. When King David found out, he went a step further. He got the bones of Saul and Jonathan as well as the bones of those hung by the Gibeonites and buried them in Saul’s father’s tomb. And then God honored the prayers for the land.

Never doubt the effectiveness of a mother’s prayers and love. Listen to Suzanne Boyle and Jackie Evancho as they sing “A Mother’s Prayer.”
