“And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please arise, and disguise yourself, that they may not recognize you as the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Indeed, Ahijah the prophet is there, who told me that I would be king over this people” 1 Kings 14:2 (NKJV)
Solomon had died and God’s prophecy about tearing 10 of the tribes from his kingdom happened. Jeroboam only had the one tribe left, but he didn’t obey God. He caused God to get angry with him for his disobedience.
When Jeroboam’s son, Abijah, became ill Jeroboam wasn’t brave enough to go and talk with the prophet himself. He sent his wife. The Bible doesn’t provide her name yet is faithful to relate the story. God came to Ahijah the prophet and told him that Jeroboam’s wife would claim to be someone else and gave the prophet the message for Jeroboam’s family.
How would you have felt if you were told that as soon as your feet touch the city where your son was, he would die? I don’t know if she didn’t believe it would happen or if she felt she had no choice, but she went home and the prophet’s words came true.
The Bible doesn’t say specifically that his wife was as guilty as he was in disobeying God, but the punishment came nonetheless to both. As parents we hold infinite responsibility for the spiritual upbringing.of our children. It is no small thing to the Lord if we do not instill in our children love and respect for the God of all the universe.
Heavenly Father, I’ve failed so often while bringing up my children and the influence upon my grandchildren. Please forgive my sin. Reach out and touch my children and grandchildren with your love that they may know you and come to love and serve you always.
