Wise Woman of Abel

“Then a wise woman cried out from the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come nearby, that I may speak with you.’ ” ” 2 Samuel 20:16 (NKJV)

Sheba was a rebel who caused the men of Israel to desert David during the time when Absalom had caused David to leave Jerusalem. Joab and the army tracked Sheba to the town of Abel. It was a walled city. Joab and the army created a battering ram to knock down the wall of the city to get to Sheba.

Then the wise woman called out to Joab and reminded him that the city was an inheritance of the Lord. She asked if he planned to destroy the inheritance of the Lord. It caused Joab to stop and think about what he was doing.

Joab told her that if they would throw down the head of Sheba over the wall, Joab would leave the city alone. The woman went back to the people of the city and told them Joab’s requirements for leaving the city. They killed Sheba and cut off his head and threw it over the wall. Joab and the army left the city alone and returned to Jerusalem.

God can use anyone to accomplish His will. In this situation he used an unnamed woman to save an entire city and to allow Joab to stop and think rather than just react to a bad situation.

How can God use me today? How can God use you today? Let’s be open to the Holy Spirit’s prompting so that God can use us, even in war times, to bring about His plans.
