“Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! “And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand “For indeed, as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely by morning light no males would have been left to Nabal!” ” 1 Samuel 25:32-24 (NKJV)
David listened to Abigail and was glad that she had prevented him from doing wrong toward Nabal. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Revenge belongs only to God, not mankind. Abigail’s attempt to prevent bloodshed was honored not only by David, but also by God.
God did handle Nabal according to the Bible. In the morning when Nabal was no longer drunk with wine, Abigail told him all that had happened. The Bible records that his heart died within him, but it took 10 additional days before the rest of his body died. Finally, Abigail was freed from the marriage that had brought her no joy.
David did not forget Abigail. He proposed to her and they were married. David followed the customs of the land where they lived instead of following God’s plan. He had married Michal but King Saul had given her to another man after she helped David escape. He also had married Ahinoam. Matters of the heart seem to be a downfall of so many in the Bible as well as in our times too.
I’m thankful that God understands our human frailties and reaches out to us to help us through the tough times when we have gone our own way. I’m glad that he calls us to come home where we are loved.
Listen to Kristyn Getty, Vince Gill, Ellie Holcomb, and Sierra Hull as they sing “Softly and Tenderly.” Jesus is beckoning us to come home to Him today.
