“Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” ” 1 Samuel 19:11 (NKJV)
Well, King Saul’s plan backfired! Michal loved David and would not betray him to her father. Not only would she not betray him, she helped him to escape! She let him down through a window and he made a clean get-away.
Then she put one of the images in David’s bed and used goat hair on the head of the image and clothes on the image and covered the image with bed covers. When King Saul sent men to take David, Michal told them that David was sick.
King Saul didn’t believe the messengers and sent them back to verify that David was in the bed sick as Michal had told them. When they saw that they had been duped, they reported back to King Saul. He was not happy.
What can I learn from this part of the story from Michal? She acted in accordance with Bible instructions in Genesis 2:24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (NKJV)
This is another example of where God did not condemn someone for telling untruths to protect someone’s life. There may be a distinction between these acts and the commandment found in Exodus 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (NKJV)
