Sad Goodbyes

“And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each to her mother’s house. The LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The LORD grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband.” So she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.” Ruth 1:8-9 (NKJV)

Here we see Naomi being compassionate, loving and kind toward her daughters-in-law even when her heart is breaking. She’s lost her husband and both of her sons while living in a foreign land. She decides it must be better to return to Judah where maybe she has some relatives. At least there she would be able to worship God among like-believers.

She’s even willing to suggest that they find new husbands among their own people. It is easy to see that there was a bond between Naomi, Ruth and Orpah as they were saying goodbye

Let’s spend a few moments here in this story before we read further. What can I learn from these two verses that can help me to become a better person? Even in Naomi’s pain, she reached out with care toward others. No matter what I’m going through today, I need to pray for God to deal kindly with those I meet and those I care about.

Naomi had received comfort from Ruth and Orpah during the 10 years of their marriages to her sons. Am I providing comfort and care to those close to me? What can I do to show more care and love to those in my sphere?

Even during the time of goodbyes Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah were sad to realize that they wouldn’t be together any longer. I’ve had to say goodbye to way too many friends over my lifetime. Some I won’t be able to spend time with until we meet again in heaven as they are sleeping until the Savior awakens them, but I still miss them.
