” But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.” Joshua 17:3 (NKJV)
This morning’s devotional started me thinking as I read on down through Joshua 17. Those verses starting with verse 3 seemed very familiar. Oh! We studied about Zelophehad and his five daughters back in Numbers 26:33 … almost word for word (depending upon the translation). Their story is also repeated.
We covered some of the aspects of their story – the basic information. However, today I want to look at it again since it seems God thinks it needs additional telling to let the principles sink in.
These daughters were bold, courageous, and yet humble in their approach to Moses as they came forward to point out the unfairness of the current understanding of what would happen to them and to their father’s property upon his death. Because of their boldness without arrogance, Moses (as directed by the Lord) set a precedence for the relatively new Hebrew nation that women were not just additional pieces of property, but they were valuable. They were entitled to carry on their father’s legacy even if there were no male children born to their father.
Am I as bold and courageous in claiming what is rightfully mine as a Child of God? Do I tell the enemy to go away because he has no part in my life as a Child of God?
