“Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.” Exodus 15:20 (NKJV)
Time has marched on. Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt and not long afterwards, Pharoah and his army followed. They soon caught up with the group of their slaves who had escaped with God’s help. Verse 20 is recorded after Pharoah and his army were drowned in the Red Sea.
Miriam is leading the praise team, thanking God for delivering them from Pharoah’s army. Notice that the verse calls Miriam a prophetess – one who speaks for God and delivers messages to God’s people.
What from this story about Miriam can nourish my soul today? Miriam had lived through some really bad times in Egypt. Yet God never forsook her. God delivered not only her and her family, but the entire Israelite nation. After their first major clash with the Egyptian army, Miriam went with timbrels and dancing – rejoicing at what God was doing for His people.
I am living in a time when it seems that the servants of the enemy outnumber God’s servants. There is wickedness all around and it seems like evil is winning. BUT, evil doesn’t win if we’ve read the end of the story in Revelation. God wins! I can be like Miriam to praise God and thank Him for all that He has been doing for His people. He is delivering us, even now.
There is a war happening all around us, but our Heavenly Father’s forces outnumber the evil one and his forces. God has already won the battle and the war. It will soon be time for the victory celebration. The question for each one of us is, “which side of the battle am I going to be on?”
Listen to Shane and Shane as they sing “You’ve Already Won.”
