Parents Are a Team

” And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the LORD met him and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” Exodus 4:24-25 (NKJV)

God told Moses that it was time to deliver the Israelites from Egypt. Moses started toward Egypt with his wife and two sons. However, Moses hadn’t circumcised his boys as was God’s command for the Israelites.

Zipporah must have had a knowledge of the Hebrew culture and requirements to react as she did in verse 25. As head of the household it was Moses’ responsibility to have taken care of the circumcision of his sons. However, he hadn’t done so.

What can I learn to nourish my soul from this event recorded in the Bible? First – sometimes women have to take charge of the spiritual aspects of the home if the husband doesn’t. They cannot excuse themselves from the responsibility just because the men don’t do their duty. Second and this is more subtle is that Zipporah seemed to know what needed done, yet she hadn’t take care of the task before nor had she reminded Moses of the necessity of circumcision even though he was circumcised. I bear responsibility in the home for things that should be done and aren’t done, even if the primary responsibility according to God’s best practices plan belongs to the man of the house.
