“Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran. and stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away, until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?” Genesis 27:43-45 (NKJV)
Jacob chose to obey his mother and deceived his father. Yes, he received the spiritual blessing from his father, but at what cost? There is always a high price to pay for times when we sin and disobey God’s laws. Jacob was exiled to Haran away from his parents. His mother thought it would be just for a few days, but it turned out to be years. She never saw Jacob again, after he left – again obeying her command to flee, before she died.
Although the Ten Commandments hadn’t been formally written at this time, the principles were from everlasting. One of those commandments was to not lie. Jacob had lied to his father. Yes, at the command of his mother (conflicting with the commandment to honor our parents).
What lesson can I learn from Rebekah in this part of her story? A mother’s love is not always trustworthy. It is important that I stay grounded in the Word of the Lord rather than the emotional ups and downs that are so untrustworthy, especially when love for our children and grandchildren is involved.
It is important for me to trust God to fulfill His promises. Yes, God had promised Rebekah that the older son would serve the younger son. However, Rebekah didn’t need to do anything to accomplish God’s promises. I don’t have to take creative action to see any of God’s prophecies fulfilled. I need to live each day according to God’s instruction book – the Bible.
