Who to Obey?

Who to Obey?

“Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it.” Genesis 27:5 (NKJV)

Remember earlier we talked about favoritism by parents. Here’s another example of how Isaac and Rebekah favored different sons. Isaac told Esau to go hunt some game and fix it so he could bless him before he died. Rebekah overheard and comes to Jacob with an alternative plan. She’s remembering God’s message to her before the twins were born. There’s no record that she had ever shared that message with Isaac, but maybe it wouldn’t have mattered if she had. Her mind was made up to circumvent her husband’s plans.

” “Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.” Genesis 27:8 (NKJV)

Now Jacob was put into a bind. Should he obey his mother or should he participate in acting out a lie to his father? The ten commandments weren’t written on stone at this time, but the principles of the ten commandments are from everlasting to everlasting. Rebekah wasn’t suggesting, but according to the Bible, she commanded him to obey.

In these last days situations may arise when I may be “commanded” to do something that is disobedience to God’s laws. What will I do then? Jacob obeyed the command and lied by actions and words to his father. Both Rebekah and Jacob paid a price for their part in this deception. God could have prevented Isaac from giving the special blessing to Esau, but he wasn’t given the opportunity to do so.

How many times do I jump in with my own solutions to a situation, believing that I’m doing God’s will? I need to wait upon the Lord and not disobey God to provide my own solutions. That’s really the take away lesson here – if taking action includes breaking one of God’s laws, then I need to not take action. Being in a good relationship with God takes priority over everything else.

We have assurance that if we ask Him, God will go with us to help us make the right decisions.
