“Therefore, Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.” 2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)
Well, the first phrase starts with “therefore” which means I need to look at previous verses to put this verse into context. Taking verses of the Bible out of context can create chaos and lots of misunderstandings.
” Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.'” 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 (NKJV)
So, looking back at the original verse, Paul tells us to come out from among “them.” The previous verses indicate that the “them” refers to unbelievers, law-breakers, darkness, Belial (name means worthless or wicked and is another name used for Satan), unbelievers, and idols.
I cannot be pure and a representative of Christ if I am closely associated with anything that is the opposite of God’s character. However, that doesn’t mean that I should avoid being around these individuals. In fact, we are called to witness to the world about God’s character. I can’t witness to someone unless I have some interaction with them. However, I do need to have healthy boundaries so that their influence is not stronger than God’s influence in my life.
