More Precious than Rubies

“For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.” Proverbs 8:11 (NKJV)

Now if you’ve ever seen a real ruby after polishing and having a jeweler professionally cut the stone, that Bible verse takes on a huge meaning! Recently I’ve learned some interesting facts about rubies.

I didn’t know that rubies are the third hardest gemstone. Also, the value of a ruby goes up when it has not been treated. Less than 1% of all gem-quality rubies are untreated. More interesting facts can be found at Wikipedia. However valuable rubies are, God says wisdom is better than they are.

What are some of the characteristics we’ve talked about for wisdom? Having the ability to make decisions better through experience and knowledge. Because we make better decisions, our choices in close friends can be healthier and stronger. We live in an ever-changing world today. If we have wisdom, we are able to be more flexible and able to cope with all the changes that happen in short periods of time.

Today we have to be able to continue to learn about subjects that our grandparents would be astounded at that we take for granted today. When we take time for learning and self-reflection, it is referred to as personal development. That’s definitely a good thing!

However, from a Christian perspective, one of the most important characteristics of having wisdom is where we are focused. Those with God’s wisdom are focused on trusting God to take care of everything – all the variables that bombard us each day. There are so many uncertainties each day. We can’t predict what someone else driving their vehicle may or may not do affecting our travel. I can’t predict where the next mass shooting will happen so that I can avoid being there. Nor will worrying about these possible disasters help keep me healthy. I need to choose wisely – choosing that God will take care of me because He loves me and His love is always pure.
