“He who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
He who keeps understanding will find good.” Proverbs 19:8 (NKJV)
Yes, I want wisdom – combining experience, knowledge and good judgment! Having only one of those three characteristics will not be enough. I need all three to be successful at anything I attempt. As I look back over my life, there have been so many times when I had one or two of those characteristics, but too often I didn’t have all three.
Solomon (King David’s son) was young when he became King over Israel. He recognized his lack of experience and knowledge. He asked the Lord for wisdom and the Lord granted him not only wisdom but more!
“[W]isdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.” 2 Chronicles 1:12 (NKJV) God promised Solomon that he would have not only wisdom and knowledge, but would also have riches, wealth and honor – more than any other king before or after Solomon.
Looking at Solomon’s life, we can see that he definitely had the riches, wealth and honor beyond any other person in recorded history. However, looking at what wisdom includes, I’m not sure that at all times, Solomon exercised good judgment. I think Solomon would agree with that assessment of his life history too.
In the first text (Proverbs 19:8) I am told that if I get wisdom, I love my own soul. I’m not sure what that looks like, but I definitely want to find out more about wisdom because it sounds like something very good.
