“Who can say, ‘I have made my heart clean,
I am pure from my sin’?” Proverbs 20:9 (NKJV)
I definitely cannot say that “I” have made my heart clean in any way. Only God can make my heart clean. I cannot take credit for anything good that I may do. Only God working through me.
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 (NKJV)
However, that does not leave me with no hope! If I walk in Christ’s light, following His example, HE cleanses me from all sin. I can’t do it on my own, no matter how hard I work at it. BUT God provided a way to include me in His family – through the blood of Jesus Christ!
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8 (NKJV)
If I declare that I have no sin, I’m only deceiving myself! Telling myself untruths sets me up for failure in all things because once I start telling myself lies then I can’t trust anything I tell myself. It sets me up for mental illness of all sorts.
However, “[i]f we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NKJV) I’m so thankful that God is always faithful and willing to forgive IF I confess (and turn from) my sins.
The sad fact is “[i]f we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:10 (NKJV) God is not a liar. I must accept that I am a sinner, saved by God’s grace and mercy through Jesus Christ!
