“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” James 1:21 (NKJV)
The Greek word used here in this text could also be translated as to dishonor. What in my life dishonors Christ?
The Bible says that gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride are some of the things that God hates. If I knowingly do things that God hates, I break God’s law and break His heart which dishonors God and His character. Spreading rumors about anyone can be covered by greed, envy and pride, as well as many other negative emotions.
If I choose to only partially obey, picking and choosing which of His commandments I take to heart, I dishonor God and His character. Disregarding God’s Word is another way of picking and choosing and dishonoring God and His character.
Some things that I may not recognize as dishonoring God, yet if I treated a country diplomat or leader this way, it would definitely be considered as dishonoring, i.e., coming late to meetings, distracting others by chewing gum, texting or answering my phone while in a meeting called by God (or the country diplomat or leader), When I come to meetings I need to consider my attire — is it appropriate for the situation? Would I dress the same way if a country diplomat or leader was present? When I choose to dress otherwise, I am treating God with dishonor.
If I withhold my testimony of what God has done for me, I am dishonoring God. If I really appreciate what God has done for me, I want to tell everyone how good God has been to me.
If I choose to not use the gifts and talents that God has blessed me with to bless others, I am dishonoring God. These gifts and talents may be spiritual or natural gifts. At the same time, if I choose to brag or make others feel less than because I think I can do the task better, I am dishonoring God and His character.
