Do the Law of God?

“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25 (NKJV)

The Law of God is a mirror to show me where I have messed up and need to clean up my lifestyle. But, how can I “do” the Law of God? James says I need to continue “in it,” which might reflect matching my life up to the perfect law of liberty.

Remember on the front page of this website, I owned up to not being perfect … EVER! There are things I deeply regret having said and done growing up that hurt my parents deeply. When I look at the Law (God’s Word) in Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:2 I am to honor my parents. Yet I failed many times. If I keep looking at the texts but not making any changes in my lifestyle – how I talk to and about my parents, what I say and do that matches or doesn’t match my parent’s value system – I’m not honoring my parents. In order to honor my parents I need to make changes in my lifestyle – talking respectfully to and about my parents, having my actions match with their values (at least while I’m in their presence or their home). It is true that I need to make my own choices to live out my values; however, it is just as important in honoring my parents that I do not disrespect them by my actions. That is the “do” referred to by James.
